I installed these with a set of 1M pots in my HH Tele a couple months ago, so it's safe to say I'm out of the honeymoon period. I was between these and the Lollar dB Humbuckers and decided to take a gamble. I was a bit unsure on if these would end up working out to be completely honest, since the only demo I saw was from Dylan himself and it seems that the video was filmed towards the end of development since his resistance reading in the description differed from what was said in the video, plus I had never ventured away from typical PAF style humbuckers. Thankfully these more than lived up to the expectations I had from his demo and I'm thrilled I took the chance! Absolutely awesome pickups, everything I hoped they would be.
These pickups have the well-rounded frequency response and dynamics that you'd expect from a more traditional underwound PAF, and all the openness and chime you would ever be able to get out of a humbucker without getting even kind of muddy when run through a high gain dirt pedal or two. The four ceramic magnets and rail pole pieces don't give up note definition in the slightest while being able to perfectly project the notes being played under heavy distortion from my Harmonic Perc or even when being blasted through my HM-2. When playing clean or through my Blues Driver, you'd never expect to hear that the sound is coming from a high output ceramic pickup. They provide perfectly clear, crystalline tones without compression even before diving in to the volume pot on my guitar. Honestly where I think they shine the most is when playing with a responsive distortion or fuzz that's just waiting to spring out of the shadows - they respond amazingly well to variations in playing and picking intensity, providing an almost-oldschool smooth and warm overdriven sound when playing in a more subdued manner yet easily pushing your tone into full blown-out bliss when strummed hard, not at all the one trick pony that you'd get from any of your typical high output pickups.
Absolutely perfect for the mix of post- and noise rock that I usually play which requires being able to have beautiful, expressive clean tones one minute and hazardous, ugly and in-your-face the next.
