Dog Ear P90

My wife Barbara gave me the Dylan P90 pickups as a birthday present. She bought them but I (Tom Dill) wrote the review.

About 5 years ago I got a Made-In-China Epiphone Casino. I liked it, found it to be well built and I aways liked the feel of the neck and its light weight. I have enjoyed it, yet it had always seemed to lack “something”. Consequently, I didn’t play it often and it spent most of the time tucked away in its case. Yes, it is a very nice guitar and while it sounded okay, I didn’t really enjoy playing it and I had considered selling it.

I’ve enjoyed watching Dylan’s YouTube videos for about 4 years now, always learning along the way. While some of technical aspects of the videos go over my head, I find them informative, well done and interesting. In his videos, Dylan has often mentioned that P90s are his favorite pickup and when he builds his own, he strives for clean, clear, articulate tones. That is exactly what I wanted from my Casino and what was lacking. Since Dylan’s videos have given me so much, I figured why not support his business and give his P90’s a try. Hopefully a win-win for everyone. Full disclosure, I also replaced the stock bridge with a Graph Tech Bridge and got a setup.

I got the Casino back from the shop a few weeks ago and it sounds amazing! It is everything I hoped for and more. In all three positions the tone is clean, articulate and clear. I know it may sound contradictory but there is a smoothness to the sound and yet it also seems to sparkle. It far surpasses anything I might have hoped for or expected. Long and short, I now love playing the Casino and she is absolutely keeper.

Sounds incredible!

I upgraded my Casino Coupe with Dylans P90s and what a great upgrade they are! The stock Epi pups were ok at times, but overall not great. Boomy is the word that comes to mind. After a few misguided tone circuit attempts I finally settled on modern style with independent volume control and treble bleed. I have a .033 cap in the neck and a .047 in the bridge, and the pups sound amazing. Clarity and punch now live in the guitar happily and I can't seem to put the guitar down. If you are considering a change I would encourage buying a set of these puppies. The buying experience from start to finish has been a refreshing return to a more personal exchange. Dylan has been quick to answer my questions with thoughtfull replies, and I am certain he will be there if needed. Pull the trigger and get these things! Now I am thinking I need some new humbuckers for a few of my other guitars... I know where I will get them!

Best P90 I ever heard!

I bought this to replace the dogear P90 in my Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Les Paul Junior. This guitar came with the Epi Pro. It was decent, but I am a fan of Dylans and wanted to try one of his P90 pickups as an upgrade. This pickup is a BEAST! Role the tone down, and its deep and throaty. Role the tone up and it screams! On clean setting, its very clear and articulate, almost glassy. With some distortion, its just total rock and roll! I am terrible at pinch harmonics, and I can actually pull them off with this pickup - its crazy! A couple notes on the install. The two wire setup with cloth wrap makes the install work a breeze - I hate stripping wires. For my specific model, the actual install took a little work. The Epi pickup came with a plastic ring (like a spacer), I had to use it for the Dylan pickup install, but it doesnt fit flush around the base plate. With a little sanding on the inside of both ends and a little needle-nose plyer work on the base plate flanges, it was good to go. Fits great, looks great, sounds great - and its a steal at the current pricing. If I had paid another $50 for it, it would still have been worth the money. Thanks Dylan!
