I originally approached Dylan with the idea of a P94 staple pickup set with Alnico VIII magnets. He quickly pointed out the construction would be problematic, if not impossible. I persisted I was looking for that DeArmond sound, and he grew suddenly thoughtful. He agreed to make the Alnico VIII P94s. I don't know if he tried these out for himself, but I am wholly satisfied.
These break up from a clean tone with a lush heft I've never experienced in a single-coil. Articulate, yet full on the attack which demands each note be allowed to sing out to the letter of the law. I've played bluesier guitars, but these P94s are emotive in ways I've never experienced before.
Overdriven, distorted, or pumped up to fuzz, these handle the full range without losing definition. They are quiet when compared to high-output humbuckers, but an added notch on the amp volume solves that issue. I'd recommend these to anyone willing to have the absolute limit of what a single-coil can produce without descending into muddy tone.
